Paideia Summer Institute

This interactive, in-person summer institute, designed for K-12 teachers, will provide you with tools to make learning relevant for students, while increasing their critical thinking, reading, writing and speaking skills. The institute will meet on the Augsburg University campus in Minneapolis.

Description

The Paideia (pie day a) approach to teaching and learning is built around the development of a student to think critically, listen carefully, question thoughtfully and make education relevant. This approach can be applied to a variety of educational subjects and settings. Develop new skills necessary to improve your teaching and foster a learning environment through interactive workshops.

Would you like to see students improve their critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking skills? In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic-minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity.  Paideia (pie DAY a) is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas to foster a more inclusive learning environment, and is particularly well suited to AVID, IB and AP curricula.

The Augsburg University Paideia Program has served the Augsburg community and teachers across the United States for over thirty years. We invite you to join us this summer for our Paideia Summer Institute. This workshop is appropriate for practicing and preservice teachers.

What are the results? Teachers give Paideia top grades for:

  • Increasing critical thinking skills and reading comprehension

  • Improving oral and written communication skills

  • Focusing more time on integrated curriculum

  • Improving participation of students across cultural backgrounds

  • Changing the dynamics between teacher and learning

  • Contributing to better attendance and engagement
